ISO 50001 is the international standard for an Energy Management System (EnMS). Applied to a ship management company, it turns fuel efficiency from a good intention into a measured, managed system. This guide covers the benefits, the requirements and the practical checks.[1][2]

Why ISO 50001

Implementing ISO 50001 brings cost reduction, organisational engagement and carbon reduction, and significant reputational benefits, demonstrating to stakeholders that the organisation is committed to managing its energy consumption and improving efficiency. Energy reductions identified through an EnMS offer demonstrable savings on energy bills, reducing the overhead of a business — sometimes substantially.

Framework and key requirements

ISO 50001:2018 sets out a framework built on establishing policies, processes, procedures and specific energy tasks that meet the organisation's energy objectives. Key requirements of the system include conducting an initial diagnosis of energy consumption for all activities, establishing, implementing and maintaining an energy policy with a commitment to achieving energy performance, and identifying the main factors that influence energy consumption.

Energy Performance Indicators

An Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI) is used to compare energy performance after the implementation of action plans. On board, the EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator) is calculated from a formula relating fuel consumed to transport work.

Saving energy on board

Typical energy-saving options include weather routing, using alternative fuels, hull cleaning and propeller polishing, and slow steaming. Staff awareness and incentives can be increased through poster campaigns, regular onboard meetings, and training on Ship Energy Efficiency.

Vessel visits and ratings

When visiting vessels for ISO 50001 compliance, check whether the crew are aware of the factors that affect energy efficiency and optimisation, whether they understand the energy-efficiency measures in the SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) and how they help, and whether they are aware of daily fuel optimisation. On the IMO's carbon-intensity ratings, a vessel rated E for 2021 must achieve rating D in 2022.

Scale and acronyms

The shipping industry is responsible for about 3% of greenhouse gas emissions. The key acronyms are SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) and EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator); EEXI denotes the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index.

Key facts to remember

  • ISO 50001 = Energy Management System (EnMS); benefits: cost, engagement, carbon, reputation.
  • Framework: policies, processes, procedures, energy tasks. Initial diagnosis of consumption; energy policy; identify influencing factors.
  • EnPI compares performance after action plans; EEOI is the operational indicator formula.
  • Saving options: weather routing, alternative fuels, hull cleaning/propeller polishing, slow steaming.
  • Awareness: posters, onboard meetings, Ship Energy Efficiency training.
  • E for 2021 → must reach D in 2022. Shipping ≈ 3% of GHG emissions.
  • SEEMP and EEOI; EEXI = Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index.
